I know it sounds lame and cliched, but hear me out.

Ask yourselves a couple questions about the car, now that everyone has had a minute to wipe the sweat from their brow and the jizz from their keyboards.

What will this car be like in 10 years?

Outdated.

That's what made the '05 era such a great car, and such an incredible collector. The technology of the old one: Reliable 5.4, 6-speed manual, no traction control. It all used technology that couldn't be outdated.

The new one? V6 Ecoboost, flappy paddles, etc. It'll look like a dinosaur in 10 years time.

EDIT: +1 to them for solving the door problem of the 05. Anyone who's ever been in one knows what I'm talking about.

Wut? Couldn't be outdated? That tech is a dinosaur now. Pretty much all tech is outdated in 10 years. That's life...

There's no way you can make that conclusion without knowing how the car performs.

Also, I think they've strayed too far from the original GT40's design language. The GT did it perfectly, where it was different, but still recognizable. This looks too different to be a successor.

Fuck the old GT doors. The only people who think they are cool are the people who have never had to live with them for more than 10 seconds. Fuck those doors.

Also, I think the styling culture has changed. I think the GT will still look like it rolled off the line in 10 years because thats the industry right now, we're not going to have much more radical departures for at least a decade so I think the GT will fit at home just fine.

So you're suggesting that they should have built a car that would have been completely torn apart by all of its modern competition?

The old GT chose to use older technology that was tested and reliable. They could've put in an early paddle gearbox, like Ferraris of the time, but chose not to.

That's why 10 year old Ferraris depreciated like falling meteors and Ford GTs didn't.

That's a bold thing to say, and premature, without having heard any other specifics about the car.

I think you're tentatively wrong

You're right, but value-wise I can.

This won't be the instant classic the 05 GT was. I'm confident in that.

I'm suggesting they use technology that can't be made gimmicky.

Ecoboost will be ditched and possibly laughed at in 15 years, twin clutch flappy paddles will be made obsolete by a faster gearbox.

The car will feel like a dinosaur in ten years, just like every other 10 year old Ferrari and Lamborghini.

I expected Ford to ditch gimmicks with the new GT, since they didn't do that with the last one.

But you're implying that technology hasn't advanced in 10 years. Have the flappy paddles not improved? And Ferrari is as strong as ever, so I doubt they're crying about the decision 10 years ago.

Ecoboost is just a trade mark for turbo.

The Ferrari F40 had a TT V8 so I guess it's outdated and gimmicky , right ?

I really doubt force induction is going anywhere, unless it is replaced by electricity.

It won't. The internet will be outdated in 10 years, and no one will want to use it. I am confident in that.

So you are saying that in order to prevent a car from getting outdated, they should make it outdated right from the factory, so it's like a"feature" ?

In my opinion, it's not a question of datedness. It's a question of image. The original GT form '05 was sensational in that it waltzed out of nowhere, beat all the competition and retained that all-important retro look. I question whether or not this new one will be memorable in many years to come compared with the '05 GT or indeed, the original GT40. It's like having a string of girlfriends. Your first is always more memorable than the third.

I'm confident in it fo sho.

I knew I'd heard this argument somewhere. Here's where. Forward it to 1:40:35.

The new one doesn't follow that recipe of analog technology that the 05 did.

Options:

Give car a twin clutch flappy paddle gearbox and the car will feel like a dinosaur in 10 years.

Give car a three pedal manual - the car will feel like a dinosaur immediately.

At this point, the manual is the gimmick. I like manuals as much as the next guy, but they aren't as fast around a racetrack, and this car needs to be fast around a racetrack. I do kind of wish it used a V8 though.

It definitely wouldn't be the fastest on the track, but it would remain relevant for much longer as a manual. I'm quoting Matt Farah here with this one, but I totally agree.

The analog-ness of a manual can't be outdated or made better. You can only shift the car as fast as you can shift it. Whereas flappy paddles will be made faster all the time.

I don't really have a problem with the turbo V6, but making it the halo to the EcoBoost subset is another gimmick to me. I think the Ford GT should stand alone as a halo car that doesn't care about MPG and uses a big V8.

I fear that EcoBoost will be gone in leu of something else in ten years, and EcoBoost will be laughed at in the same way people put the word 'Turbo' on everything in the 80s.

I'm with you on this one but mostly because you'd have to pay me to take a TT V6 over a supercharged V8, transmissions aside.

The manual exotics are more reliable from those years of first-gen flappy paddles, and thus more desirable.

Kinja'd!!! pauljones > Jay Lauer

Kinja'd!!!2

Not quite.

To start with, the reason that the prior Ford GT didn't have things like a dual-clutch was that Ford did not have one to begin with, and didn't have the budget to develop an expensive, one-off transmission design for a limited production super car. Otherwise, you can bet your ass that they would have put in everything they could possibly have to make the car better and faster.

So, yes, Ford did make the conscious decision to use "proven" technology, but not for the reason that you think. It had little to do with "proven" technology or "value-driven decisions," and everything to do with the budget they had available to them.

As far as the technology that you listed, it can very easily be outdated. Don't believe me? Go a TC-equipped sports car from 15-20 years ago. Then drive a contemporary compact car. You'll find that even without the power, the TC systems these days are far smoother and more advanced.

Also, the supercharged 5.4 never really won any reliability awards.
